OH. MY. GOD.

OH MY FREAKING LORD

WOW!

I came in this with the intent to bash on the game.

I came out of it signed up for the beta.

This thing looks like it has potential. Let’s see if EA doesn’t fuck it up, because the dev team looks like they are actually trying to innovate and do something new instead of just cashing in.

Leveling is a bit different in GW2 from the other MMOs. I restarted playing GW2 a week ago, and this character was level 7 at that time. Today I hit level 36 (not to mention I didn’t play all the time). Honestly I could have been level 33 but I decided to rush and get my Cultural tier 1 so I stood at the crafting station for 20 minutes and got up to 35. And then I went to Ascalonian Catacombs and got another level because I traveled through half of an unexplored map and accidentally stumbled upon 2 events.
It’s pretty much about exploration if you want to level. The hearts are there just to be that bonus of xp and karma and to give you some fancier items. Other than that, I (and I guess most of other people) level up by exploring, participating in events, crafting and doing dungeons. Oh, and it really depends on what profession you play. I honestly can’t play Necromancers or Engineers because they are just tedious to me. Now Warriors on the other hand…
Wow, I did not expect this to become a wall of text. WUPS!

The Pacific Rim Trailer: A Guide

electricsed:

Hey there sport, you look like you just finished watching the trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s new film, Pacific Rim, opening this July in theaters everywhere!

You: Yeah, I did!

That’s great! Did you like it?

You: I thought it was pretty interesting, but I noticed that it gave me a sudden sense of deja vu, so I put approximately zero thought into the matter and came up with the strong belief that this movie is a ripoff of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

image

Did you know that the giant robot and kaiju genres have been around for a long, long time? Did you know that Evangelion is not the first nor the most popular series to utilize giant robots (that aren’t even robots, I can’t stress that enough)? Did you also know that there are very few actual similarities between the Eva units and the Jaegers from Pacific Rim?

You: Yeah but I don’t know all those/I really liked Eva/my mom said I was smart so obviously I’m right about this.

Take a look around the giant robot/kaiju film lists, you might be pleasantly surprised, and find something new you like. You’ll also probably notice the same passing similarities to Pacific Rim that you saw before, because PR is a nod to both genres—like a love letter, I believe it was described. That means it’s supposed to have a few vague similarities. It wouldn’t be a very good tribute if it didn’t! (Also your mom was probably just saying that because otherwise the 16 years she’s spent taking care of you would be meaningless but that doesn’t mean you’re not smart you just need to find out from an objective third party who hasn’t ever wiped your ass.)

You: But maybe I’m the first person to realize these similarities, and I really think the internet should know.

Trust me, you’re not. People have been crying about similarities between fully-robotic mechs piloted by two grown humans and organic creations that spit in the face of god piloted by 14 year old children since the movie was announced. If it makes you feel any better, the Power Rangers fans have started speaking up recently, too.

You: I read somewhere that Guillermo del Toro was trying to make an Evangelion movie once.

I think you have him confused with Peter Jackson, who was attached to talks (possibly just rumors) of an Evangelion film in conjunction with Weta Workshop. It’s an easy mistake to make as they both look remarkably like long-lost brothers who just emerged from an isolated cabin for the first time in two decades.

image

Author’s note: Jackson recently lost a bunch of weight, making him look a lot less like del Toro’s twin, and a lot more like a hobbit who just emerged from a hobbit hole for the first time in two decades.

You: I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life now.

Well, since you seem to be a fan of giant robots, or giant sort-of-human clones wearing armor with children inserted into their spines to make them SEEM like giant robots, maybe you could branch out and discover more of the giant robot and kaiju genres? I’m sure you’ll find lots of things you like!
